Jadavpur University Central Library

The University Library System comprises the Central Library, Salt lake Campus Library, Departmental Libraries and the Libraries attached with different Schools and Centres for higher studies and research; along with Centre for Digital Library and Documentation and Accessible Library for Persons with Disabilities. The Central Library of Jadavpur University is housed in the three-storied building on Jadavpur Campus. Its shelving space and working space is about 36,000 sq. ft. (approx.) and is extended by new construction of four-storied building Annex Building (each floor 5500sq. ft).

Most of the Departments in the main campus have Departmental Libraries. Reading and borrowing facilities in the appropriate manner are given in the Departmental Libraries to the faculty members and students, scholars of the Department. All the computers in the campus are connected through LAN and are IP address authenticated so that all e-resources can be accessed from all the computers.

There is a separate two storied library building at Salt Lake Campus. The total floor area of the library is near about 6,940 sq. ft.(approx.) in each floor.

On Salt Lake Campus, there are 5 (five) Departments, 2 (two) Schools (School for Mobile Computing and Communication and School of Nuclear Studies and Application) in Power Engineering Dept. under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University. There is an Academic Staff College (UGC). There are no department libraries at Salt Lake Campus. But the Academic Staff College and School for Mobile Computing and Communication each has separate library. All Faculty Members, Students, Research Scholars, Officers and Non-Teaching staff members enjoy library service facilities from only one Campus Library.

Centre for Digital Library and Documentation:

The Centre for Digital Library and Documentation has been established in November 2003 in the first floor of the new Annex Building of Central Library under the Potential for Excellence Program-I of UGC. The Digital Library has a Learning Resource Centre (LRC) with 60 Nos. of terminals, 4 Nos. of servers and one reading room for users.

All the facilities of Digital Library are available on the Salt Lake Campus Library which is linked with the Central Library. There are two servers for managing the Digital Library connectivity & 16 terminals for Learning Resource Centre for students.

The Libsys7 web version software is used for library automation. Databases of books, journals and theses etc. are created and being updated. The Web-OPAC facilities are available for searching the databases.

The e-resources of the University are available through the Library portal (in the Jadavpur University website) on the internet. The EBSCO Discovery Service is used to provide a single platform search for all the electronic resources subscribed by Jadavpur University and the JU catalogue.

Accessible Library for Persons with Disabilities:

The Accessible Library for Persons with Disabilities was inaugurated on 5th September 2018 at the ground floor of the Jadavpur University Central Library. The Accessible Library has five staff members and the number of users is about 45.

In this Section, Audio and Braille books are prepared for the students. They also access e-books from Sugam Pustakalaya, Bookshare and Jstor. The Accessible Library uses Jaws Professional, NVDA, MAGIC 14, OPEN BOOK 9, Read (Braille) software to access the e-resources.

Institutional Repository on DSpace:

The main objective of the Institutional Repository of Jadavpur University is to create and develop an archive of the University's own documents for sustainable use. In order to build the Repository (named as IR@JU) the DSpace software 6.3 version has been used. The DSpace is maintained remotely in the cloud server. All the users of Jadavpur University have access to the Institutional Repository through username and password.

The DSpace community has been categorized into four Faculties, Accessible Library and a separate section for Archives. The Faculties are further subdivided into different Departments. Each Department has its own collection of Syllabus, Question Papers, Master Dissertations, Ph.D. theses, Lecture Notes etc. The Accessible Library has a collection of audio books and .pdf documents. The Archives contains Rare Documents, Convocation Addresses, Occasional Papers, and Periodical Repository etc.
