dc.descriptionAcharya Prafulla Chandra Ray was born in Khulna. A famous chemist and teacher, he was one of the pioneers of the chemical industry in India. In 1879, he passed the Entrance examination from Calcutta Albert School. He went to Presidency College. However, he won the Gilchrist Scholarship before completing his course and left for England. In 1889, he received his doctoral degree and won the Hope Award from Edinburgh University. On his return, he joined the Chemistry Department of Presidency College as Assistant Professor and was subsequently appointed Chief Professor. After his retirement in 1916, he was appointed Palit Professor of Chemistry at Calcutta University. He continued to teach there till 1936. In 1901, Ray founded Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works, the first manufacturing factory of chemicals and medicine in India. He worked hard to encourage the use of the Bengali language in the study of the sciences. From 1924 to 1944, he was President of National Council of Education, Bengal. He wrote in Bengali and English. His books include Bangali-r Mastishka o Tahar Apobyabohar, Anna Samasyay Bangali-r Porajoy o Tahar Protikar and History of Hindu Chemistry.en_US
