dc.descriptionRashbehari Ghosh was born in the village of Khandaghosh in the district of Barddhaman. He went to a local school and Barddhaman Collegiate School, and took his Entrance examination in 1860 from Bankura High School. Ghosh stood first in the F.A. examination in 1862, and second in the B.A. examination, which he took from Presidency College, in 1865. He was the first Indian to pass in the First Class in English in 1866. A gold medalist in the Law examinations (1867), Ghosh taught English and Mathematics for a while in Berhampore College. He started legal practice in 1872 at the High Court in Calcutta, where Sir Ashutosh and Dr. Rajendra Prasad were his colleagues, and soon established himself as a reputed lawyer. In 1875 he was appointed Tagore Law Professor at Calcutta University. His lectures on the law of mortgage in India were subsequently published as a book. Apart from the titles of D.L. (1894) and C.I.E. (1896), he was also conferred an honorary Ph.D. degree in 1913 by Calcutta University and a knighthood in 1915. He was a renowned philanthropist and was an enthusiast in matters of education. Rashbehari Ghosh donated Rupees 22 lakhs to Calcutta University, and was the principal financial benefactor of National Council of Education, Bengal (Bangiya Jatiya Shiksha Parishad), the organization from which Jadavpur University claims descent. He remained Founder- Chairman of the Council till his death in 1921.en_US
