Description: Only son of Ramchandra Banerjee-a poor learned Brahmin clerk who died when Gooroodas was about 3 years old. Born in Calcutta on 26th January 1844, completed 8 years' School Course in 3 years by double promotions. Passed Entrance Examination in 1859 and First Arts Examination, standing first, in 1862. Stood first in Bachelor of Arts Examination in 1864.Passed M.A. in Mathematics standing first. Joined Presidency College as Professor of Mathematics after B.A.- confirmed in service after M.A. 1866- passed B.L. and joined Berhampore College as Professor of Law and also practice Law - shone brilliantly in both. Joined Calcutta High Court in 1872. Continued legal studies and in 1876 became Doctor of Law. 1878 - joined Calcutta University as Tagore Law Lecturer. 1887 - nominated member of Bengal Legislative Council. 1888 -Judge Calcutta High Court which office he filled with distinction for 16 years. 1890 - Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. One of the leading founders of the National Council of Education - influential member of Executive Committee and Managing Committee till the end of his life.
