Description: Taraknath Palit was born in Calcutta. In 1871, after being called to the Bar, he returned from England and set up his legal practice. He was Chief Patron of the Society for Promotion of Technical Education that was established on 25 July 1906. He was a major founder- donor of Bengal Technical Institute, which was first housed at his home on 92 Upper Circular Road. To promote higher studies in the sciences in India, he donated Rs 15 lakh to Calcutta University to be spent on research in Chemistry and Physics. His only condition was that the professors would have to be of Indian origin. Calcutta Science College was established principally with the funds donated by him.
