dc.descriptionTrigunacharan Sen was born in Sylhet, now in Bangladesh. In 1921, he passed his Matriculation from Silchar Government School. In 1926, he graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Bengal Technical Institute of the National Council of Education, Bengal. It was on Binoy Kumar Sarkar's encouragement that he went to Germany in 1929. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Munich in 1932. On returning to India, he participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement, and was imprisoned and exiled from Bengal in 1933. From 1933 to 1942 he worked with many nationalist organizations in Assam. In 1943 he joined the College of Engineering and Technology under the National Council of Education, Bengal, as Administrative Officer. The following year (1944), he was appointed Superintendent. When the College was granted the status of University in 1956, he was named Rector and later Vice Chancellor. He was Mayor of Calcutta from 1958 to 1959. In later years, at different points of time, he was All-India Chairman of the Institute of Engineers, member of the Education Commission, Vice-Chancellor of Benaras Hindu University, and Education Minister of India. Sen was Chairman of the National Council of Education, Bengal, from 1972 to 1975.en_US
