A specialist in the Bengali, Sanskrit and Persian languages, he was also a musician and scholar of music. He was a great benefactor of poor scholars and a patron of Sanskrit scholarship. On the occasion of his mother Bisweshwari's funeral, he donated seventy-five thousand rupees to set up Bisweshwari Smriti Bhandar. Teachers of Sanskrit were offered scholarships from the interest on this deposit. He also donated Rupees 3,00,000 for founding the Hindu University in Benaras. He was also founder of Hindustan Insurance and its first treasurer. He also donated large sums for the development of indigenous industry and trade. Undaunted about the risk of his massive estate being seized by the British Government, he once fought a case against the government and won by the High Court's decision. He refused to accept the title of 'Raja' conferred on him by the colonial government. Roychowdhury was closely associated with the National Council of Education, Bengal. Apart from being one of its trustees, he was also Honorary Secretary and Treasurer at various times.
