Description: Abdul Rasul was born in Brahmanbariya in Tripura. In 1888, he passed the Entrance examination from Dhaka Collegiate School. The same year, he went to England for higher education. He studied in Liverpool for a while and in 1891, King's College, London, awarded him a certificate in German and French literature. He completed his Matriculation (1892) and B.A. (1896) from St John's College. In 1896 he took his M.A. from Oxford. A law student of Middle Temple, Rasul was called to the Bar on 19 April 1898, and on 9 July he received the degree of Bachelor of Civil Law. He was the first Bengali from the sub-continent to get these degrees. Abdul Rasul knew many languages other than Bengali and English. These included Urdu, Hindi, Persian, French and German. In 1898, he returned to India. He was Chief Examiner of English of Calcutta University's Entrance examination from 1899 to 1902 as well as the examiner of the B.L. examination. Ashutosh Mukherjee, Vice-Chancellor of the University, appointed Rasul to lecture at its Department of Law. But the Governor General annulled the appointment because of his alleged involvement in revolutionary activities during the agitation against the Partition of Bengal. Encouraged by Rabindranath Tagore, he declared in his 1906 presidential address at the Bengal State Congress meeting in Barisal that Lord Curzon was responsible for the Partition. The first Bengali Muslim to preside over the state assembly, Abdul Rasul was President of the Grand Meeting held at Chittagong in 1910. In 1917 he was elected Secretary of Bengal State Muslim League. He was founder-editor of The Mussulman (1906). Known for his generosity, he was closely involved in social welfare. Even before Bengal was partitioned and the agitations began, Rasul established a Krishak Praja Samiti for poor farmers. He had a close association with the National Council of Education, Bengal.
