dc.description | Hirendranath Dutta was born in Chorebagan, Calcutta. He won a monthly scholarship of fifteen rupees while studying at Calcutta Metropolitan School from which he took his Entrance examination. Dutta stood First in the First Class in his B.A. examination, and won gold medals in English, Sanskrit and Philosophy from Presidency College (1888). In the following year, he took his M.A. in English. In the same year, he stood first and won a gold medal in the Law Examination. In 1893, he was awarded the Premchand-Raychand Scholarship. The next year he was appointed attorney in the High Court. He assisted Annie Besant in the Home Rule Movement. He had his differences with Gandhi and left the Congress when the latter became President. He promoted the spread of national industry as a means of resisting colonial rule. A founder of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, he was its Secretary for many years and was President in 1932. Dutta was also President of Bengal Theosophical Society, Vice-President of International Theosophical Society, and Founder-Secretary of National Council of Education, Bengal. A learned philosopher, he was also a major essayist and eloquent orator. Calcutta University awarded him the Jagattarini Gold Medal for literature in 1939. He was awarded the Subba Rao and Rampran Gupta Gold Medal in 1941 by Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. He wrote fifteen books in Bengali, including Gitay Iswarbad, Upanishad-e Brahmatattva, Vedanta Parichay, Buddhadev-er Nastikata and Jagyabalker Adwaityabad. | en_US |
