Description: Acharya Satis Chandra Mukhopadhyay was born in Bandipur in the district of Hooghly. He was one of the main formulators of the ideals of the national education movement and the chief founders of the National Council of Education, Bengal. He passed the Entrance examination from South Suburban School in Calcutta in 1879. Five years later, he took his B.A. from Presidency College, where he studied on a government scholarship. He began his career as a teacher. Later he studied Law and practised at the High Court in Calcutta. In 1893 he became a follower of Sri Bijoykrishna Goswami. Goswami inspired him to adopt Akashbritti, that is, not to work for pay. In 1895 he established Bhagavat Chatuspathi and in 1897 he started the magazine Dawn. The magazine aimed to compare the religions, philosophies, literatures and cultures of the East and West. The editor tried to demonstrate that India had an advantage over the West in certain areas of knowledge and creativity.In 1902, Mukhopadhyay established the Dawn Society. As an educator, Mukhopadhyay aimed at encouraging modern research inspired by nationalist ideals. The remoter objective was to combine theoretical knowledge with practice, religion and philosophy, Eastern thought and Western science as the stable basis for a programme of national education. Deeply resentful of the blind emulation of the West, he was determined to build a progressive curriculum and system that would be compatible with Indian needs and sensitivities. When Bengal National College and School was established on 14 August 1906, Aurobindo Ghosh was appointed Principal and Mukhopadhyay Superintendent. Other than teaching English, History, Political Science and Western Philosophy, he supervised the functioning of the National Council. Later Mukhopadhyay retired to Benaras.
