dc.descriptionNilratan Sircar was born near Diamond Harbour in Netra village. In 1876, he took the Entrance examination. After studying medicine at Campbell Medical School he worked there as Assistant Surgeon. He joined Medical College in 1885 and passed his M.B. examinations in 1888. He later took his M.A. and M.D. degrees. In 1893, he was elected Fellow of the University. He was later appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Undergraduate Departments of Arts and Science. From 1919 to 1921 he was Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. He received honorary degrees of D.C.L. and L.L.D. from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge respectively. He was Joint Secretary of National Council of Education, Bengal, with Deva Prasad Sarbadhikari from 1910 to 1911 and with Hirendranath Dutta in 1912. From 1924 to 1941 he was Co-Chairman of this organization and was appointed Rector more than once (1930 to 1931, 1936 to 1940). He played a major role in founding Bengal Technical School and Jadavpur Engineering College.en_US
