Description: Ashutosh Chowdhury was born in Haripur in Pabna. In 1880, he took his B.A. and M.A. examinations from Presidency College before leaving for England. In the year 1885, he successfully completed his B.A. from Cambridge University and qualified as barrister, and the following year, took his M.A. and L.M. degrees. His fame as barrister grew in a very short while. He was against the mendicant policies of the Congress and favoured a policy that would make the organization financially self- reliant. In the course of his presidential address at the Bengal Regional Conference on 25 June 1904, he famously declared: 'A subject race has no politics'- a statement that became almost proverbial throughout the country. As a nationalist leader, he participated in the formation of councils and in the movement against the Partition of Bengal. The famous lecture of Ananda Mohan Basu, delivered on 16 October 1905 at the meeting at the Federation Grounds was translated by Chowdhury into English. On 14 November 1905, he called upon the students to boycott the University. On 16 November, at the meeting of the Bengal Landholder's Association at 52/4 Park Street, all the assembled leaders of Bengal accepted a programme for nationalist education. To this end, the letter written by Ashutosh Chowdhury is of great historical significance. He was elected Chairman of the Pabna District Association in 1907. From 1912 to 1913 he was Vice- Chairman of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. He served as judge at the High Court in Calcutta from 1912 to 1920. Chowdhury was also a founder of Bengal Landholder's Association.
