Description: Son of Tara Prasanna Bose. Born on 11th May 1855. Passed Entrance in 1871, standing second in order of merit. 1873 passed First Arts of Calcutta University standing 5th. 1877-passed B.Sc. Examination of London University with distinction. In 1879 qualified as a Geologist from Royal School of Mines standing first in three subjects. In 1880 appointed Deputy Director of Geological Survey of India and worked in that Department till 1903. He discovered coal, copper, manganese and iron mines in many places in India and was the first to discover oil in Assam. His greatest achievement was discovery of iron mine in Garumaheshani in 1903-04 after he had resigned Government post to keep self-respect. It was due to him that Tatas established the famous Tata Iron Works, He also studied cultural subjects and wrote two books on Indian and World civilization. Took great interest in education. At his instance Geology had been introduced as a subject of study in Presidency College. He was closely associated with Sir Taraknath Palit in the foundation of the Society for Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal and was the first Principal (Honorary, 1906-08) of the Bengal Technical Institute. He was closely connected with the National Council and was elected the Rector of the Council in 1913, which office he held up to July,1920, when he resigned. He endowed prize funds and made other donations continuously to the Council. He founded a medal after the name of his son Asoke Kumar which is still awarded for proficiency in Geology. He died in Ranchi on 27th April 1935.
