dc.description | Father: eminent physician Durgacharan Bandyopadhyay. Passed ICS (1869) and returned to India in 1871. He was appointed Assistant Magistrate at Sylhet but was dismissed by the British Government on flimsy grounds. In 1876 Vidyasagar appointed him lecturer in English at Metropolitan College. He later taught in the City College, Free Church College and finally in 1882 in the institution which he himself founded and which later became Ripon College (now Surendranath College). Surendranath held numerous public offices: Member, Calcutta Corporation (1876-1899), Chairman, North Barrackpore Municipality, Member of the Legislative Council (1893-1901). A moderate in his political views, Surendranath participated in and often spearheaded numerous movements and courted arrest and imprisonment on several occasions. Along with Ananda Mohan Basu, Surendranath established the 'Indian Association' (1876) and helped the Indian National Congress emerge out of it (1885). He presided over several Congress sessions and was a member of several delegations to the British rulers seeking wider representation in the government. As a participant in national movements, Surendranath played a more significant role in the anti-partition agitation in 1905. Surendranath was famous as an orator and as an eminent journalist. He worked as a reporter of the Hindu Patriot and edited the Bengalee which he himself founded. Of his writings, the book A Nation in Making is most remarkable in the history of Indian politics. | en_US |
