Completed two decades ago, it holds the distinction of being the first official documentary film produced by the University. Over time, the film has evolved into a heritage document capturing not just the institution but also becoming a part of its living legacy.
The film traces the origins of Jadavpur University to the National Council of Education, founded during the Swadeshi movement as a bold assertion of indigenous education. It reflects an era when the spirit of freedom and intellectual pursuit converged, drawing visionaries such as Aurobindo Ghosh into its founding philosophy. The documentary pays tribute to this legacy while connecting it to the University’s evolving identity.
The film offers a nuanced portrayal of campus life, its academic excellence, vibrant extracurricular culture, and strong emphasis on sports and collective engagement. It presents a visual chronicle of an institution committed to the holistic development of mind, body, and creativity.

Entirely produced by the dynamic and spirited group of students, the film stands as a testament to the spirit of inquiry, creativity, and documentation.
Title: Petal per se
Description: Petal Per Se- A Film by Students of Mass Communication (Department of Adult Continuing Education & Extension); Producer: Jadavpur University, under the potential for excellence scheme, UGC; Project Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Partha Sarathi Chakroborty; Directed and Edited by Parag Sarkar; Screenings & Recognition:

•	First Screening: North Virginia Community College, USA (Cultural Exchange Programme)
•	Kolkata International Film Festival, 2008

•	Nominated in the 5th Vatavaran Environment and Wildlife Film Festival, 2009; Synopsis: Petal Per Se is a documentary that explores the ecological and economic transformation of discarded flowers in India. Flowers are widely used for religious, cultural, and social purposes; however, surplus and used flowers often result in financial losses for farmers and contribute significantly to water pollution when disposed of in rivers and other water bodies.
The film presents an innovative and sustainable solution: a manufacturing process that converts discarded and decaying flowers into natural herbal dyes. These dyes are eco-friendly and safe for human use, unlike synthetic chemical alternatives. They can be used in sweets and for preparing gulal, the fragrant, coloured powder traditionally used during the festival of Holi.
This recycling initiative not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also provides an additional and stable source of income for farmers by enabling them to sell their excess produce. Furthermore, it creates employment opportunities for labourers involved in the process.
The documentary serves as a tribute to this nature-friendly scientific innovation while also examining broader aspects of flower cultivation, pollution challenges, and sustainable solutions. It ultimately aims to bring economic stability to farmers and promote environmental conservation.; Production Controller: Sounak Sengupta; Chief Assistant Director: Gargi Bhattacharya; Script Writer: Debayani Bose; Executive Producers: Divya Sen, Tirtha Mukherjee, Mridula Kar, Avishek Gupta; Assistant Directors Soumyadip Das, Samrat Purkait, Sujit Kumar Roy, Sounak Sengupta; Narration: Dr. Ananda Lal, Gargi Sengupta; Camera: Buddhadev Das; Graphics: Parag Sarkar; Music Composer: Subho Chakraborty; Sound Recordist: Asim Das; Still Photography: Joydeep Chaudhuri, Prasenjit Sen, Saborno Mukhopadhyay; Production Executive: Shubhendu Chattopadhyay; Camera Assistant: Swapan Baidya; Camera Attendants: Chandan Saha, Jayanta Das; Technical Assistance: Shabdakalpadrum Communication Pvt.
